GTD Review: TodoMatrix Professional

Overview

TodoMatrix is the task management application that I used previously.  With this in mind, I’m documenting it as a baseline rather than as a product to consider.  My primary reason for leaving it for another application is that it does not offer the span of device/platform compatibility that I need.  Some folks who rely solely on their Blackberry or iPhone will be able to make due with this application, but there appears to be no plans by RexWireless to support Android, Windows or Mac, despite having promised many times since 2011 that a new web interface and an Android application are “very close” to being released.

Pros

TodoMatrix has all of the core features I would expect in a pure GTD application.  It also allows me to create delegates from contacts in my address book for the purpose of assigning them tasks.  Few systems allow you to do this and most require that the system generates an email notification or even require that they create an account.

Cons

TodoMatrix is only available on older Blackberry (version 6 and older Blackberry OS devices) and iPhone.  There is a web interface that gives you limited access to your data, but it’s unattractive, inefficient to use, and does not support all the features of a mobile application.

GTD HierarchyOrganization hierarchy must include Projects > Tasks > Contexts > TagsYes
Focus AreasI wouldn’t mind having another higher level of organization above projects, either as drawers to file projects in, areas of focus, or nested project folders as these things would let me separate Work, Home and Personal projectsNo

AndroidApplication that runs on the Android platformNo
iOSApplication that runs on the iOS platformYes
Free TrialTry the application for free for a period of time (days)30 days

User Interface

The user interface is acceptable on the iPhone.  If you’re using a Blackberry, you probably don’t care how “pretty” the UI for the application might be.  The web version is dated and unpleasant to use.

  1. Good review and thanks for it.
I have used ToDoMatrix, IdeaMatrix, AlertMatrix, RexDeskTop & Rexconnect, etc with my earlier BBs until I discovered to my surprise that Rexwireless seem not to be planning any update fpr BB 10. I have waited and I am running out of patience.
Do have an idea of a comparable alternative? Would like to see one that can combine Allen’s GTD & Covey’s FTF?

    • oca: It really depends on your needs. If you don’t need multi-platform support, I would probably recommend Nirvana just due to the ability to order tasks within a project. Otherwise, I would recommend Doit. Both of them annoy me since all created tasks are given a “Next” status. If you used todoMatrix, you’ll probably find this annoying too. If that could be remedied, I wouldn’t really have much complaint about either of them as candidates.
