Feel Empowered, Cancel Comcast

Several months ago, we decided to cancel our home telephone.  There were a number of factors that went into this decision.  For example, we were paying more than $50/month for a phone number that was really only used for my wife to talk with her month each weekend and the occasional work-related conference call.  Perhaps more importantly, we had started to get telemarketing calls on behalf of Comcast trying to get us to upgrade our service.  This would only be moderately annoying if I weren’t paying $6/month for a private unlisted number.  Think about that for a second.. they give our number to telemarketers to call us, even though we’re paying them extra to not give our number to telemarketers.

Anyway, so cancelling our phone service was a lovely experience.  It just felt good.

It felt so good that we decided to call back a few weeks later and cancel our cable television as well.  We had been using Roku and watching Netflix and Hulu Plus on it for a few weeks at this point, and really didn’t see much reason to keep paying Comcast more than their service was worth.

Have we regretted it?  Nope.  It’s too bad that there isn’t a better competitor for internet service in our area.

Update: I had a billing issue with Ancestry.com a few days after writing this post.  I called them and felt as though they appreciated my business and wanted to make sure I felt as though it was valuable to me.  They were friendly and sincere.  This type of experience is why their company was just sold for $1.6 billion.
