I’m a technology professional living in Holly Springs, North Carolina, though I’m originally from Jacksonville, Florida. I’ve spent the last two decades working in various Operations, IT and Product Management roles in the HR BPO and health insurance industries. I’m a Six Sigma Black Belt and also hold active certifications as a Certified Agile Scrum Master (CSM) and Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO). I’m also SAFe 6.0 certified.  I’ve also held credentials (SPHR) in the HR industry.

Prior to this I worked in law enforcement as a police dispatcher and a reserve police officer. I miss the excitement of this type of work; I don’t miss the hours or working the weekends/holidays. I definitely don’t miss the pay.

My wife, Jen, and I both attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania where I studied biological psychology and anthropology. I loved the Dickinson campus though I was not particularly happy there.

We also have two kids, an eleven-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter.

Running and Triathlon

In 2007, I quit smoking and started running with the idea that it would help me stay off cigarettes. Ultimately, it didn’t, but that’s neither here nor there. In 2008, I ran seven marathons and half-marathons. By the end of the year, I had my eye on triathlons, having made several friends who really enjoyed the sport. A close friend had already talked me into buying a road bike and so I signed up for several events in 2009. By the time the season started, I had bought a triathlon bike and was considering a full Ironman triathlon. In November 2009, I completed the Beach2Battleship Ironman Triathlon in Wilmington, North Carolina. It was a challenging and grueling event, but also a life-changing experience.

I’ve spent the last couple of years doing a lot less training, and fewer races. I ran the Disney Marathon and raced the Rocketman Half-Ironman triathlon in 2013 and then decided I need a long break. I’m just getting back into running and will probably look for a local race to do in early 2017, if only to keep myself motivated.

I’m really not as inclined to run so much as I used to be though I really would like to get back to it just to maintain physical fitness. I’d really like to do some cold(er) weather runs and do a little trail running. I actually feel like I enjoy those runs.

Genealogy

I took a college history course several years ago that included a genealogy assignment as the final project. The instructor required us to (correctly) research at least three generations of our families and document our findings. I was instantly hooked and have managed to trace my maternal line back to the late 1700s and my paternal line to the late 1600s.

In general, I’ve been working on these two record sets off and on in parallel for the last 8 or nine years.

I finished up two major goals in 2019 when I published and distributed family records for my maternal line in May and my paternal line in November.

Today I’m working on my wife’s family record and that of my biological father’s family.

Travel

As a kid, my parents used to try to get us away from home and take vacations into the mountains at least once a year. That only lasted for a few years. As an adult, I’ve never been one to take vacations, usually because I was always so overloaded at work.

In 2011, my wife and I decided to take an actual vacation and picked Las Vegas as the destination. We planned a three-day trip to the Grand Canyon while we were there. In 2012, we visited Los Angeles, Yosemite National Park, and San Francisco. We stayed closer to home in 2013, only going as far as Savannah, Georgia a couple of times. We considered going to Glacier National Park for our 2014 trip, but that was put on hold due to the impending birth of our son in August of that year.

Our plan when we moved to North Carolina was to vacation in different spots until we figured out where we want to retire. We’re big fans of the Blowing Rock/Boone area.

Cooking

I was a late bloomer when it comes to cooking. As a young adult, I think I had maybe half a dozen meals that I would regularly cook. Trying to follow a recipe was maddening — I would screw something up and just lose my patience, throw it away, and order a pizza. A few years ago, I realized that I can usually either fix whatever went wrong or, provided I have some extra ingredients, correct course pretty quickly and keep going.

I do a lot of cooking with cast iron, either on a skillet or in a dutch oven. I also cook quite frequently on the grill when the weather is nice. I use a smoker pretty much regardless of the weather.
