I’m a nerd. I used to design web sites and develop software programs. Now I oversee business operations and process engineering in the health and life sciences sector for a large software company.
My wife and I were runners for a while. I competed in triathlons for a few years from shorter-distance sprints up to full Ironman events. We both stopped running when we had kids a few years ago. Now we just run after them. They’re faster.
We travel a bit these days, and I love to cook. We moved from north Florida where I grew up to a small town in North Carolina where things are a lot slower.
Our plan when we moved to North Carolina was to vacation in different spots until we figured out where we want to retire. We were a little older when we had kids, so retirement isn’t that far off. Well, in theory.
We’re big fans of the Blowing Rock/Boone area, and we’ve had cabins closer to the border with Virginia as well. It’s harder to find kid-friendly hikes up there, but it’s hard to compete with some of the country roads and driving through peak fall colors in the area.
I was a late bloomer when it comes to cooking. As a young adult, I think I had maybe half a dozen meals that I would regularly cook. Trying to follow a recipe was maddening — I would screw something up and just lose my patience, throw it away, and order a pizza. A few years ago, I realized that I can usually either fix whatever went wrong or, provided I have some extra ingredients, correct course pretty quickly and keep going.
I do a lot of cooking with cast iron, either on a skillet or in a dutch oven. I also cook quite frequently on the grill when the weather is nice. I use a smoker pretty much regardless of the weather.
