One of the few sacrifices we made in deciding to put an offer on our current house was garage size. We wanted a garage that was 22×24 or larger, but most houses in our price range have the typical 20×20 garage. They aren’t big enough for parking two cars on a daily basis, so we only use it for one.
We also use it for other stuff. A lot of other stuff. Not long after moving into the house in June, we had room for one car, and the other half of the garage stored a lawnmower, four adult bikes, two kids bikes, totes of Christmas ornaments, painting supplies, toolboxes, yard tools (shovels, rakes) and gardening tools, trimmer, blower, etc.
I have a small shelf that runs the length of the garage door but it will hold limited weight. I’ve noticed some neighbors have overhead storage platforms and eventually I’d like to build one, but that’s only good for long term storage.
I decided to look into a track system and was really impressed with Gladiator, specifically their GearTrack product line. They also have a GearWall product that basically covers the entire wall, but I opted for defined tracks to hold tools, equipment and other items. As of this weekend, I have two rows of 12′ of track on one side of the garage to hold yard tools and equipment, and two rows of 8′ of track on the other side to hold odds and ends. It came out pretty nicely, I think.
